The 2009 Business Brokers Conference was held at The Ellerslie Convention Centre in Auckland last month. This annual event covers a broad range of topics and also provides an opportunity to network with other professionals. There was, of course, much discussion around the events of the last twelve months and most said that they had endured a difficult year. Many thought that most buyers were shopping for bargains and that lending constraints had made completing agreements far more problematic. Most said that there is a shortage of business listings on the market.

We learned that ABC continues to outperform the rest of the industry. While we agree that good quality listings are harder to find, our sales over the last several months are up on the same period last year. We put this down to a combination of working harder and smarter, and recognising that challenging markets require innovative solutions.

Yes, good listings are hard to find, but businesses are selling. We have been receiving multiple offers on many businesses and the time to sell has been shortened considerably.  A lack of good listings has created a supply-demand imbalance with price expectations being exceeded in many cases. This reflects both an attitude and a strategy that defy most market commentators and means money in your pocket. Now, more than ever, we are finding that when businesses are well priced and well presented the results can be impressive.

If you are thinking about selling, we can show you how to get the very best result in the current market.

Please call us to arrange a confidential discussion and appraisal.

WHAT DO BUYERS LOOK FOR?

Richie Lowe AREINZ

Buying A Business

The recession is over according to the media so now may be a good time to consider buying a business. Are you ready to take the big step forward? What does it take?

Here are some things to consider:

  1. Being a business owner means you are the proverbial “chief cook and bottle washer”. You need to do anything and everything to run the business. Not just being the CEO sitting behind a desk

  2. The prospective buyer is buying the owner’s “baby” and must realise that the owner may be very reluctant to let his long hours and hard work go unrewarded

  3. Do you have the necessary funds or know where you can get them?

  4. Is the time right to buy? The time is right when it is right for both the buyer and seller

  5. Buying a business carries a degree of risk. They are no guarantees but you can minimise the risk. If you want a “sure thing” then a business may not be it for you

  6. There is a big responsibility owning a business. Your employees, customers/clients, suppliers and especially you have financial responsibilities.

  7. Be patient. Buying the right business may take time. But don’t procrastinate. When the right business comes along be ready to act.

  8. Have a genuine reason to buy. Discuss it with the people that will be involved and be prepared to do what it takes.

  9. Have the courage to take the final step. You need to actually buy something not just go window shopping

  10. Seek professional advice. A good place to start is with your ABC business broker
